What is HPV and Why Is It Important?

HPV

HPV stands for human papillomavirus. It’s a very common virus that spreads through sexual contact. In fact, it’s the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in Canada. Health experts say that about 75% of people who are sexually active and not vaccinated will get HPV at some point in their lives.

Despite its prevalence, most cases are asymptomatic and apart from genital warts, there are often no visible signs or symptoms that a person has contracted an HPV infection.

HPV and Cancer

Individuals infected with high-risk strains of HPV have an increased risk of certain types of cancers. HPV is responsible for nearly 3,800 new cases of cancer per year in Canada alone. These include:

  • Cervical cancer
  • Head and neck cancers
  • Anal cancer
  • Vulvar, vaginal, and penile cancers

How to Prevent HPV

The best way to protect yourself from HPV is to get vaccinated. The vaccine works best if you get it before becoming sexually active. In many parts of Canada, students can get the vaccine for free through school programs. However, immunization coverage among adolescents and young adults varies across Canada and remains below the national target of 90%.

Who Should Get the Vaccine?

The HPV vaccine is recommended for everyone between the ages of 9 and 26, regardless of gender. Some people believe HPV only affects women or only causes cervical cancer, but that’s not true. In fact, men are more likely to get head and neck cancers caused by HPV.

Even adults over 26 who haven’t been vaccinated can still benefit. The vaccine can protect against types of HPV they haven’t been exposed to yet. If you’re 27 or older, talk to your pharmacist to see if getting the vaccine is right for you.

Vaccinations

The HPV vaccine helps protect against cancers that are caused by HPV. The vaccine allows the body to build up a defense to HPV if you encounter the virus. Speak with your pharmacist today to determine if HPV vaccination is right for you.
